Landmark complaint filed at SUHAKAM for public inquiry into haze pollution as a human rights violation
A broad alliance of civil society organisations filed a pioneering complaint at the Malaysian Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) as a proactive countermeasure to address the chronic and persistent haze pollution. The action led to a Roundtable Discussion to gather the diverse perspectives of subject matter experts, legal advisers, and key stakeholders in order to develop concrete plans to address the issue of domestic and transboundary haze pollution. Saving the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve
On the evening of September 8, after almost a year of campaigning alongside local allies in the Pertahankan Hutan Simpan Kuala Langat Utara Coalition, the state government officially revoked the degazettement of the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve. (Read more)
MESTECC cracks down on illegal plastic waste factories

The Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change began raiding several illegal plastic waste recycling factories with the aim of shutting down 100 illegal plastic waste factories by the first quarter of 2019. This follows investigations into the imported plastic waste trade in Malaysia began and findings which were then published in The Recycling Myth: Malaysia and the Broken Global Recycling System report exposing issues with the imported plastic waste trade. Stopping the haze
300,000 Malaysians signed a Greenpeace Southeast Asia petition demanding corporate accountability from business giant Industrial Oxygen Inc (IOI) for its links to forest destruction in Indonesia and air pollution in the form of haze. A year later IOI, committed to addressing deforestation and exploitation throughout its supply chain. A great start for the new Malaysian office and its young staff and supporters! (Read more)
